Brazilian Maps: Country, Cities, and Subways
|
|
| Brazil |
Brazil is a huge country, larger than the lower-48 U.S. states. It's divided into 26 states and a Federal District. When you research Brazilian sites for travel information, you may find that the listings are by state, and not by city. To figure out what state a city is located in, you'll need a good map. The map here is a pretty good one, showing the states, the regions into which Brazil is officially divided, major cities and time zones.
To see Brazil in the context of the whole continent, click here for a highly resolved map.
To research information, you will also find it useful to know the names of the state capitals (which are also most of the major cities) and the two-letter abbreviations for each of the states. Starting from the deepest south, by region, they are:
SOUTH:
Rio Grande do Sul (RS): Porto Alegre
Santa Catarina (SC): Florianópolis

SOUTHEAST:

| City Maps |
Finding your way around a strange Brazilian
city can be an adventure, to say the least. Help is at hand here on
Gay Travel Brazil! We've posted a collection of detailed city maps for cities our
readers are likely to visit.
PLEASE NOTE: These maps are not intended to be complete, In some cases, maps that spread over two
orignial pages were scanned leaving a dark band where the pages come together.
In other cases, two maps on facing pages were merged into one. Unfortunately the
merges aren't seamless, so you will see discontinuities where the two pages were
brought together. However, all of these maps are still quite detailed and
usable, and will give you a good overview of the areas covered. For some cities
there's a metro area overview map with areas marked in yellow showing page
numbers for more detailed maps. Numbers shown on map names here correspond to
the page numbers shown in the overview map.
After you're oriented using
these maps, you can get even more detailed maps and directions in a number of
major cities, by using our link to an on-line
Brazilian Map/Address Search Service.
On that page, in the box labeled "Endereço" ("Address") choose a city
from the drop-down box, then the name of the street in the field marked "Rua"
("street") and the address number in the field marked "Número," then click on
"Mostrar Mapa" ("Show Map").

| Rio de Janeiro Subway Map |
Rio de Janeiro has a modern metro system. While not as extensive as in some other major cities, it's useful to visitors. Many destinations of interest to Gay Travel Brazil readers are conveniently accessible by metro.
The system is easy to use, with system maps in all stations and trains, as well as maps of the immediate surrounding area
in each individual station. The metro operates every day, from at least 6:00 a.m. to near midnight.
Schedules and fares change frequently, though, so please check this information locally.
If you're familiar with the metros in Montreal, Paris, Mexico City, Barcelona, etc., the metro works the same way.
Buy a single, round-trip, or 10-trip ticket at the ticket booth. (A round trip or multiple ticket is a good idea because
the lines at the ticket booths are very long during rush hour.) The ticket is pasteboard with a magnetic stripe on one side.
Insert the ticket into the slot in the turnstile. If it's a single ride ticket, the turnstile will swallow it. If it's a multiple-ride ticket, it will be returned to you for future use (although it will be swallowed
when you've used the last ride). Just follow the many signs for the direction in which you're going. "Embarque" means "boarding." "Saída" means "Exit."
Now have fun exploring the city!
If you understand Portuguese you can get more information on the Metro's official site: http://www.metrorio.com.br
